Ready for his close-up! White House releases official Bo portrait

Lawrence Jackson / The White House

First Lady Michelle Obama with Bo, the Obama family dog, in the White House Kitchen Garden.

When kids write into the White House, they're usually hoping for a response from the most famous member of the first family.

Sorry, Mr. President; it's not you. It's Bo, the Portuguese water dog gifted to the Obamas by the late Senator Ted Kennedy.

"It is me and Bo and we're in the garden," said the first lady of the portrait Monday, the day it was first officially released. "And one of the reasons we did this picture is because we get so many letters from kids, mostly, who want to hear about the garden, they want to see it, and they also want to see Bo. Bo is really the most popular."

So kids who write in will receive this picture now, taken in the White House garden and signed by Bo himself (he's really quite accomplished at paw-printing).

"We've heard so many great stories from kids who've been inspired and doing things like changing the way their families do things. And those letters are always just a joy to get," said Mrs. Obama. "So we want to have something a little more tangible than just a letter to give to kids, because often it's the visual thing that makes it real."

The perfect picture, she said, took "three clicks" to take -- and in weather that was like "a hundred degrees," the first lady appreciated the dog's cooperation.

"Three-click shot, sitting there just like a little man," she laughed.

To be honest, that picture is just begging for deragatory comments. It just shows how stupid our first couple are.

Like me posing for a picture with my dog wearing a white pointy hood. Barry has his own practiced poses... his nose in the air pose is his "bad ass ****" pose as stated in his own writings. These two just beg for people to take potshots at them.

I don't understand what this picture has to do with you dressing up like a klan member and posing for a photo.

Where's the rest of the family for this "official portrait" shouldn't the first dog be photographed with his humans?

Sorry to say this but I don't think that family really wants the dog. He's good PR. Once the Obamas move out of the white house - poor Bo is going to come down with something and have to be put down. Mark my words.

A real classy lady with her dog.

Just one question, how many shoes did Bo chew up before he was fully trained?

Nice Picture. Once again racism has to show up and make a beautiful moment ugly.

It is a nice picture but since kids are the ones writing in, wouldn't it be better for the two daughters to be photographed with Bo? He is their dog after all. However, I understand if the Obamas don't want to send photos of their daughters to every child writing in.

Reading the above article shows why the picture is of the 1st lady and Bo:

"And one of the reasons we did this picture is because we get so many letters from kids, mostly, who want to hear about the garden, they want to see it, and they also want to see Bo".

The garden was started by the 1st lady, and Bo was given to the Obama family_all of whom help to take care of him, including President Obama.
